Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell, a Democrat, faced arrest and charges of burglary after authorities discovered her inside a residence in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Police apprehended Mitchell, 49, and subsequently booked her into Becker County Jail on a first-degree burglary charge.
The incident unfolded early Monday morning when law enforcement responded to a homeowner’s report of a burglary. Upon arrival, officers encountered a woman inside the residence, later identified as Mitchell. Records indicate that Mitchell’s late father resided on the same block where the alleged burglary took place.
Mitchell, who represents Woodbury in the Senate, was elected in 2022 and is currently in her first term. Prior to her political career, she served as a television meteorologist and an Air National Guard commander.
While the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Caucus refrained from commenting on the matter, they acknowledged being aware of the situation. Republican Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson emphasized the expectation for legislators to uphold high standards of conduct, expressing anticipation for appropriate consequences both legally and within Mitchell’s legislative capacity.
