Gavin Cooper, currently a junior majoring in community and leadership development at UK, is among the participants in the Spring 2024 semester of WilDCats in the Capitol. He is interning in the office of Senator Joe Manchin (WV) and highlights the invaluable hands-on experience the program offers, emphasizing its direct impact on understanding the intricate workings of governance in the nation’s capital.
The program’s structure provides students with a semester-long immersive experience in Washington, D.C., wherein they live together, attend classes, and undertake full-time internships, all while staying on track to complete their academic degrees. Amelia Iliohan, a graduate of UK who participated in WilDCats at the Capitol in 2018, underscores the program’s significance in providing access to career opportunities in Washington, particularly for students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. She currently serves as the associate director of events and member engagement at the National Association of States Departments of Agriculture (NASDA), crediting her participation in the program for igniting her passion for international agriculture.
